Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, both the observable and the unobservable. It can be used to change the world in so many ways for example understanding people’s emotions to bigger things like helping people overcome depression, anxiety, traumas, etc. Psychology can help me achieve my vision for social justice because of what it’s known for, ‘the study of behavior and mental processes.’ There’s a lot more to psychology than just ‘behavior’ and ‘mental processes.’ My vision for social justice, to achieve social justice, is to unite. Psychology can help with that throughout mental processes and behavior as well. A mental process to want to unite and understand why we’re uniting and the actual behavior of uniting.
My fire project issue is illegal immigration. There are hundreds of motivational factors that either pull or push people to leave their home countries. Immigrants choose to migrate because they’re motivated to do so. They are motivated to search for more money, a better life, more opportunities, to reunite with their families, and many other reasons as well. In a website, Teaching Tolerance, a woman writes about her reasons to leave. Elvira says “ She believed in the promise that the United States has made to immigrants for more than 200 years:
If you work hard, you will succeed here.” She was motivated to succeed so she can help her family, that motivated her to immigrate illegally. Another reason that leads immigrants to their decision of migrating is the psychology of health. Immigrants also travel trying to find a place where they will have a better life in general. In some places Central America a lot of health related issues go on. In an article titled Health and Safety “Typhoid Fever is a food- or waterborne illness that occurs throughout Central America (it's caused by salmonella). Long-term travelers should seriously consider taking a typhoid fever vaccine before setting off, as the malaria-like symptoms are very unpleasant.” This is another reason why they immigrate. A third psychological concept that connects to my fire project is social psychology. It connects to social psychology because social interactions around Central America influence people’s motivation to want to immigrate. In an article titled Central America's Violent Northern Triangle it says “El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras consistently rank among the most violent countries in the world. Gang-related violence in El Salvador brought its homicide rate to ninety per hundred thousand in 2015, making it the most world’s most violent country not at war. All three countries have significantly higher homicide rates than neighboring Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama.” This is another reason why immigrants want to leave, the social interactions and Central America overall leads to them to want to leave.
The field of psychology is important to humanity for many reasons. One of those reasons is so that the scientist can explore both behavioral and mental processes. Many people in the world have rare issues involving either behavior or mental disorders. These conditions have changed the life of the people because psychology along with some science has helped people move on and it has made it easier for them to live happily. Psychology has also helped understand why people behave certain ways. If someone is very giggly and excited one can assume that they are happy or excited. Overall, psychology has helped scientist and doctors discover and treat issues/diseases and many other things and this really helps humanity.
The major takeaways I have had during the year in AP Psychology have been many. I learned so much and experienced a lot during the year. I started off with little exposure to psychology and over the course I was exposed to new information. I really liked when we learned about mental disorders and what causes them. I liked this unit and will always remember it because I can connect it to my family and others that surround me. Another major takeaway was the drug section. A family member of mine passed away due to overdose and well now, after the course, I know more about the drug. I know a bit more of the side effects and stuff. I know there’s more that I will be taking away but overall those are things that will always stick out to me.
